Having grown up in the Pacific Northwest, Catherine Hingson developed an early love of nature and the outdoors. Catherine has developed her art skills over the past 25 years, she finds great peace and satisfaction in painting the many beautiful scenes around her.
Everyone has been given a gift, mine is the ability to manipulate colors–using oils, watercolors, and pastels–to create expressive pictures. They represent various picturesque places in Oregon — along the coast as well as inland gardens and, of course, the gorge!
While we are driven to create and express ourselves, we run into blocks of that expression. We make our own constraints when we say, “That’s no good” or “Nobody will like that.” This is when I remember what the master dancer Martha Graham said to the budding choreographer Agnes de Mille:
“There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique. If you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and be lost.”
I started with acrylics, but am known for my oil and watercolor paintings. My newest works consist of large, colorful Northwest landscapes on gallery wrapped canvasses. The use of bold, vibrant colors is my calling card. This work is displayed at local art shows and events in Oregon. Currently, there are paintings on display in the Artists’ Co-op Gallery in Lincoln City, Oregon, and in the Yaquina Art Gallery in Newport, Oregon.
I hope there is something in my work that helps make you feel alive and enriched–like I do when making it. Then go out and make your own art and let me know what you’re doing!
