I paint the beauty of the Pacific Northwest in oils, capturing the essence of this majestic region through an impressionistic lens. Using a very limited palette of six to nine colors—sometimes restricting myself to just three—I strive to encapsulate the subtle nuances of light that dance across various elements of the landscape. Water, in its numerous captivating forms, is a primary focus in my work. Whether it is the serene waves of the ocean, the powerful rush of waterfalls, or the gentle flow of rivers, I am endlessly fascinated by the challenges and rewards of depicting light interacting with water.
This fascination stems from my upbringing on the shores of the Crimean Peninsula, which instilled in me a profound attachment to large bodies of water. The grandeur of the Pacific Northwest landscape now serves as a boundless source of inspiration. The interplay of light, especially as it reflects on water or grazes other objects, is a constant source of wonder for me.
During the dry months, I engage in plein air painting to capture these fleeting moments, later utilizing these spontaneous studies as valuable references for my studio work. My technique is anchored in the tactile and expressive qualities of oil paint. I appreciate the tangible, solid feel of the medium, and my approach involves painting from thin to thick with both brushes and palette knives. I relish the process of applying thick daubs of paint as the finishing touches, which adds a distinctive texture and depth to my work.
Through my art, I hope to share the enchanting light and timeless beauty of the Pacific Northwest, inviting viewers to join me in appreciating these extraordinary moments in nature.
